Government urges businesses to tackle race pay gap - Debut The battle for perfect working conditions for everyone is long, arduous, and seemingly endless. This is the latest shot fired in it. According to RightsInfo, a government-backed report has urged UK businesses to start dealing with the ever-yawning race pay gap. How you ask? By advising them to publish a breakdown of all their employees by salary and ethnicity. The report, conducted by Baroness McGregor-Smith, had some shocking findings pertaining to workers from black and minority ethnic backgrounds (BME). Statistically, BME workers: are more likely to have university degrees, and yet are more likely work in lower paid jobs more likely to work in lower skilled jobs have 12% lower employment prospects than white workers The recommendations Baroness McGregor-Smith, former CEO of Mitie Group, was the first Asian women to lead a FTSE 250 company Looking to address this racial equality and the resulting race pay gap, Baroness McGregor-Smith recommended that all businesses with more than 50 employers publish a race and pay breakdown. These companies would also have to come up with a five-year aspirational plan if the government does choose to act on the Baroness suggestions and create legislation. Last year, draft regulations were put forward for companies with more than 250 employees to report the gap in pay between men and women. No significant companies have yet acted on these suggestions. Despite this, Baroness McGregor-Smith remains determined, saying that she will push harder for legislation if no businesses adopt the voluntary actions in  her report. If we don’t see a surge of people taking that up because they have too many other priorities well then fine, we’ll legislate, she told the BBC. Nevertheless, this does raise important questions concerning the ways in which institutions address issues like the race pay gap. Even with legislation, is it possible for business and government to root out discrimination and unintentional bias? It can feel awkward and sometimes self-doubt around your own worth can creep in.“Employees who are hoping for a pay rise often worry about whether they’ll be taken seriously and what would be a fair raise to request,” says  Jane Jackson, a career management coach and author of Navigating Career Crossroads. But there are certain things you can do in advance to approach the conversation with greater confidence.Know your company’s internal pay rise policies and processes Many organisations have a process in place to manage salary reviews. Check to see if there is a scheduled, annual process in place or whether pay rise requests are made on an ‘ad hoc’ basis. Find out whether there are pay ‘bands’ that you move up incrementally within or whether there is room for negotiation.Find out what other people in comparable roles are being paid “Research the industry standard for roles like yours in a similar industry and similar sized company,” says Jackson. “See what similar roles are paying by looking at job ads on SEEK or go through salary surveys (such as those on recruiter websites or government websites) to gain an idea of the industry norm. Once you’ve got a better sense of industry standards, compare that to what you are currently earning. Does it look right for the number of years’ experience you have or is your salary below the average?”Identify the value you bring to the role “What have you done that has made a difference to the company, your department and your position?” Jackson asks. “Look at your tangible accomplishments,” Jackson recommends writing a list of your achievements, such as if you have saved the company money, improved profits, streamlined processes, improved communication, culture, teamwor k or policies, created something new that benefited the company or offered suggestions that were implemented with great results. “In order to be taken seriously when asking for a pay rise you must prove you are worth it,” says Jackson.Set up a meeting “If you want to approach your manager about a salary raise, you need to set a time and a place to meet for a half hour discussion with them,” says Jackson. “Get it in their diary so you have quiet time to discuss it properly.” You might like to hint in the calendar invitation or email that this is a more serious discussion using terms such as ‘review’ or ‘conversation’ and avoiding terms such as ‘catch-up’ or ‘chat’.Know what you’re asking for Asking for a pay rise is not simply a matter of requesting more money â€" you need to consider a number of things. Tough (Question) Tuesday Whats your intention for 2010 Resolve by Creative Kismet These are resolutions I can get behind, even though Ive recently decided that resolution is a dirty, dirty word. These read more like intentions, which I think is a sweet, sweet word that almost provokes me to hug it. Yes, the Spring girls have made me think long hard about intentions, and how they differ from goals resolutions, why theyre superior in a lot of ways. Last year, my intention for 2009 was one word: Focus. That word drove a lot of my goals action items. Because of that, Ive learned to focus (aka not have my Gmail open every minute of the day, do one thing at a time before going on to the next, not put too much on my plate) pretty damn good this year. Now Ive disclosed that my 2010 word is Simplify. Even if you dont answer any other questions from my 1 Thing post, answer this: Whats your intention for 2010?
